Mid-Atlantic CIO Forum: Meeting Announcement Topic: “Green Computing: IT Greening Its Products and Services” Date: October 16, 2008 Location: Towson University It is a reality today in our economy that business strategies have now embraced the greening movement. Companies have turned to developing plans on how to shape their responses. As a business meets the challenge to stay competitive as well as improve efficiencies in its environment, a CIO is now faced with supporting the goals and strategies of the business as it greens the business while greening IT at the same time. Examination of trends in many areas need to considered; such as, global impacts, competitive factors, environmental impacts, community and workforce impacts, technology vendor strategies and offerings, power management, recycling. What is the carbon footprint IT must move toward? What are the government laws and regulations encouraging or requiring efficiency improvements? What are the industry initiatives? How does IT improve efficiencies in data centers, in cyberinfrastructure, in disposal of electronic waste, in telecommuting, and many other aspects of IT? What should a CIO consider in assessing a strategy to improve efficiencies? At the October 16, 2008 meeting of the Mid-Atlantic CIO Forum there will be an in-depth look at “Green Computing: IT Greening Its Products and Services”. First, Will Cappelli, Research Vice President, Gartner, Inc. will address “Greening the Business, the Supply Chain and its Impact on IT/Data Centers”. Mr. Cappelli will provide an overview of the broader spectrum of the Greening movement. “Environmentally conscious management of energy consumption will become a fundamental task for enterprises' corporate infrastructure and operations organizations….the increased volatility that has characterized energy prices” in the past, “as well as cost-independent concerns about energy consumption, is forcing businesses to take their first steps toward the development of energy consumption management initiatives that are independent of established cost and facilities management processes.” (Cappelli, Gartner) The focus of the meeting will then move more specifically to the topic of Data Center Energy. Teresa Tung, research manager within the Infrastructure Research Group at Accenture Technology Labs, will review the Data Center Energy Forecast. The Data Center Energy Forecast covers a wide range of ‘green computing’ initiatives and helps operators identify solutions appropriate for their organizations and make the case for adoption. The measured results of 11 technologies as implemented in 17 case studies by corporate data centers offer a menu of energy saving opportunities. The Forecast is the first of its kind to quantify data center energy efficiency based on measured results from corporate data centers rather than vendor estimates or research implementations The third part of the meeting will be an examination into a “Green Data Center” – a collaboration between Constellation Energy and Accenture. Presenters, Jeff Johnson, CTO & Manager of IT Infrastructure, Constellation Energy Group, and Kevin Keathley, Executive within Accenture Technology Consulting, will discuss the strategy, practices, and challenges in the collaborative development of a green data center. They will share their experiences in the planning, in the first steps in developing the response to the greening challenges, and examine current initiatives particularly from the state of the computing industry, data center cooling optimization, enterprise architecture, governance, waste management and alignment with the business. Mr. Johnson and Mr. Keathley will examine the best practices and technologies used to gain efficiency and costs saving. Please join our members at the meeting!
