Please plan to join fellow CIO Forum members and invited guests at the meeting of the Mid-Atlantic CIO Forum on November 17, 2005. The Forum provides an environment committed to fostering excellence in business and Information Technology. It is a non-profit organization founded by CIO’s for CIO’s. Join us on Thursday, November 17th at 8:00 AM for presentations and discussions on records management. How an enterprise goes about records management is a critical issue in today's business environment driven by a new wave of laws, litigation, corporate oversight by government, and global competition. Strategy and implementation of a records management program can have material impact on business performance, competitive advantage and shareholder value. Consider two facets of records management: E-mail and document management. With E-mail having grown into a critical channel of business communication and business record, what can be employed in an email retention program so these records can be managed as the mission critical asset they have become? What are practical approaches and lessons learned that can be used for a successful strategy in document management today? What are the driving needs for better document retention programs? What do CIOs have to understand about the variables and issues to address in an enterprise-wide record management program? Dan Greller, the Chief Technology Officer and Senior Vice President of Legg Mason Wood Walker, Inc., will discuss "Practical Considerations for an Enterprise Email Retention Program". Mr. Greller will talk about practical approaches to email policy and effective measures in implementing email retention and archiving programs. He will focus on the critical components of a policy and program in E-mail retention and archiving and discuss how an E-mail program can be successfully integrated within a business. As Chief Technology Officer, Mr. Greller is responsible for technology strategy, infrastructure engineering, technical support and operations. He is also responsible for the Information Security and Business Continuity functions. Mr. Greller has over 20 years of experience in the technology field. Prior to his position at Legg Mason, he held a variety of infrastructure management positions for such firms as CS First Boston and JP Morgan. Mr. Greller is a member of the SIA Technology Management Committee and is a past member of the SIA Regional Technology Management Committee. He is a frequent public speaker and a noted authority on IT governance and process improvement. Scott H. Sweren, Practice Manager of Fortrex Technologies, will discuss “Document and Records Retention and Destruction Considerations”. Mr. Sweren will cover topics ranging from creating the business case for a formalized program to auditing the program. Included in this discussion are a selection of records and retention issues, managing the program, legal and regulatory considerations and electronic records management. Mr. Sweren has conducted numerous seminars on document management. He has over 20 years of practical hands-on and managerial experience in Information Technology with expertise in analyzing business processes, assessing key application controls and reviewing security controls consistent with a risk-based audit approach.
