Open Meeting

Please plan to join CIO members and invited guests at the March meeting of the Mid-Atlantic CIO Forum. Information Technology executives are continually challenged by the requirement to meet business needs while maintaining networks and procedures that are secure and minimize risk to the business. How can a company protect and secure data and systems without negatively impacting business processes and user convenience? What are the latest threats, tools, strategies, laws and regulations and what is being forecast? Each year the CIO members ask for an update on security risks and threats, tools and successful strategies. In this meeting, the Forum will examine the evolving worlds of cyber crime and security authentication as vehicles for clearer understanding of threats realized and foreseen and successful measures and strategies for Information Technology to employ to keep data and systems secure.

Rick Doten, Managing Principal, Verizon Security Solutions, the first speaker, is recognized within the industry for his wide industry knowledge and special expertise in application security/threat modeling and wireless security. Currently his work involves working with customers around the globe to understand their security practices and provide a transfer of knowledge. He also shares with clients the challenges of specific industries and what he sees in effective security programs. Mr. Doten will present on "Cyber Crime". He has a unique approach to vividly depict to Information Technology executives and other business executives the threats, risks and defenses against crime in the cyber world. Mr. Doten will review current threats and the criminals behind them. Drawing from his experiences and expertise, he will provide illustrations and real world examples of the different methods used by hackers today - and the damage they cause. During this session, he will depict: who the cyber criminals are, what they do, why they do it, and the tools and techniques they use to wreak havoc in cyberspace. He will discuss how organized and focused their activity has been in recent years, and what trends are being forecast for future threat vectors. Mr. Doten will identify procedures that can be incorporated by company personnel as individuals, and by an organization company-wide, to be better prepared to defend and protect their businesses.

The second speaker is Mark L. Kay, CEO of StrikeForce Technologies, Inc. Mr. Kay is a well recognized leader in security and risk management and in his leadership in the development of several unique software products that help prevent Identity Theft. Mr. Kay will focus on "Security Authentication Plus". The requirements for stronger solutions and regulations across the globe for security are growing rapidly in conjunction with security budgets even during a global economic downturn. Mr. Kay will review through the history of authentication (from simple name and passwords to complicated passwords to 2-factor, 3-factor, etc.), which leads to understanding the latest methods. He will conduct an open discussion of how to stay ahead of the fraudsters. He will discuss how this leads to the latest push for "Out-of-Band" authentication methods which can work locally as well as remotely. Mr. Kay will also explain some of the latest regulations, how the auditors review them and how they affect all corporations these days to some degree. He will present a summary of the security and technology analysts' views on the issues and solutions. Having been a CIO and Global Technology Auditor, Mr. Kay understands the importance to impart an understanding of potential next steps and follow-ups for the IT executive and their company.
